I've been trying to install the compatibility patch so i can use the hd version, but when i run the .exe it says "Age2HD installation was not detected at". I have already the game installed on steam so i don't know what to do.

Please do a clean installtion of Age of Empires II HD, as stated in this link :

Make sure you follow all steps.

I followed the instructions step by step and i keep getting the same message "Age2HD installation was not detected at" when I try to install the compatibility patch so i have to select manually the directory and even doing that when every time I enter a lobby I get the pop up "You must install compatibility patch"

You'll need to do a game diagnostics.
For that, go to your lobby. Above-left, click on Options->Game Diagnostics.
Click begin scan.

Keep clicking "Yes" up to 10 times.
If it still doesn't work, go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Age2HD\
Check if there is any folder called "New folder". If yes, enter it and copy everything inside then past it there : C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Age2HD
