Trying to play Expanding Fronts with a buddy, and problem is I can't join their games and they can't join mine. We can get into each others lobbies on Voobly, but when we launch the game we can't make a connection.

Network diagnostics shows no errors, connect on Port 16000 just fine. Also, we can connect to each other just fine on GameRanger which uses the very same Port 16000 UDP, so not a problem with Port Forwarding.
Vooblynat log shows some concerning errors.

Looks like an issue with Direct Play. Which operating system are you running?

Windows 11, I can play plenty of other DirectPlay games like Total Annihilation etc just fine.
