You mentioned you have a genuine copy of the game through Steam so I don't see a reason not to utilize it! It will give you a much better and smooth gaming experience than the pirated versions out there.

Apart from that, make your driver are all up-to date. There shouldn't be any reason to tinker with DirectX as long as the rest of your software and drivers are up to date. Your windows updates and GPU drives are very important for a reliable and stable system. Hope this helps.
