it says downloading update but automatically gets disconnected from the lobby

Close all lobbies and retry joining MS again. If it still doesn't work. Disable autojoin on all lobbies and relogin to Voobly, then use the 'Game browser' to login to MS again.

If that does not work as well. Restart your modem/router and computer, then try again.
