It's a great game, with virtually no skill upper limit to skill; however, the steam servers are extremely laggy and sluggish. I feel like there would be a decent crossover from AoE as they are both excellent rts games. There are thousands of active players for Rome 1, however the vast majority are stuck to single player/campaign mode due to the poor lobby and servers. Voobly has a very nice network as well as a thriving community which Rome 1 would benefit greatly from. A major reason Rome 1 is losing traction is due to the poor lobby steam lobby and a lack of an integrated community board. Currently people play on steam and game ranger, but neither is ideal. Options like gameranger are indeed fast and a great playing experience however they lack any lobby or community section and so it is rare to see any games there.

Even in 2020 without a new patch released in 15 years, there are still new clans and tournaments every year, however numbers are slowly falling away, and we could certainly due with some fresh blood.
