We've had many complaints w/ smurfs over the years. What do do people think about:
  1. Boost the default rating when a high ranked player creates a new account. Perhaps not allow in the NPL at all.

    Problems:
    - player could get a lower ranked buddy to create the account instead.
    - what if players share an IP?
    - high ranked players could also give out boosted accounts to new players.
  2. Instead of changing starting rating, the highest rating found through alias finder could be displayed. This is likely the best option. Not sure where we would display ratings, the tooltip is already very wordy already. I suppose we could have another column for 'AKA Rate' and display the highest rating there. See attached screenshot (the AKA rate is random values -- I'm just picking on cobra here).

I would lean to doing #2 if anything. I think #1 is too problematic.

Since this might be controversial, we could limit to the new player lobby only -- at least to start.

i really like #2. the positive side of it is that it doesn't reveal the Smurf's account and it only reveals their highest rate. this would be a really great way to reduce noob bashing

For NPL only we have nothing to lose.

There is NO excuse for smurfing in that lobby.

For the rest of the lobbies, needs a lot more discussion. Even showing a rating aka will annoy many users. Our users are used to being able to smurf, although limiting the number of smurfs allowed is another idea.

Well, I'm fine with this. Can't really find a reason to be against this so for me it's a "1"

Strongly agree with this for NPL. Strongly against this for any other lobby.

We can't do this safely do this... unless we charge for accounts. Hence the alternative suggestions.

If we limited what we think are smurfs we could lock out players on a shared machine at a netcafe.

The "Rate AKA" idea, will show bogus data -- i.e.: the highest ranked player. It's not ideal but much better than locking out some players on a shared machine.

ogeday1, ogeday2 and ogeday3 are three different players of different skillsets that might share the same router.. but #2 is an ok idea all the same.

Client update release in NPL.

There was less high rated players than I expected.. some shots from actual players in new player lobby:

MS RM was more interesting, though, I've disabled the new feature for non-head mods or now. MS RM screenshots:

Assuming this is done by IP, people with dynamic IPs will be completely unaffected by this surely?

That said I do think it is a good idea. I have no problem with smurfs, but I find it irritating when people refuse to tell you their real rate when you ask. If I just got completely wiped, it'd be nice to know just how much better said player actually was than me. Even more so if it was a relatively close game.

I think you should roll this out to MS ASAP.
