What is the rating system?
- The rating system is a way to play the games Voobly hosts competitively with your friends!
- Play games to earn points and become the best gamer around.
Rating Algorithms for AoE, AoK, AoC and AoM
- Elo - Elo as it exists today, winning team has points distributed evenly among the winning team.
- ESO - Elo variant used by ESO for AOM and AoEIIO
- Elo Fair - ESO + Fair team balancer (lower rated players get more points when game is won) + points are also scaled up Nx if there are N players on a team. So instead of 16 pts split across the winners, on 2v2 it's 32 split across winners.
- ESO Fair - ESO + Fair team balancer
- Elo Fair 2 - Elo + Fair team balancer + no point scaling
ESO algorithm is targeted per-request for AOM and AOE III games. Elo Fair and Elo Fair #2 are targeted for AoE - AoC, sticking with Elo because that's what people are familiar with. The only change is how to distribute points.
To understand what the fair team balancer does take a look a examples below, look closely are '2100' player under these algorithms.

How does the rating system work?
- When you join a rated game, you will be given the opportunity to gain or loose points based on how well you play or how well your team plays.
- The higher skilled players you face as opponents, the more points you will earn if you win.
- Conversely, the lower skilled players you face as opponents, the more points you risk losing.
- The greater the difference between your rating and your opponents rating, the greater the point alteration will be at the end of the game.
- If teams are chosen, the average of each teams points go up against the average of the other teams rating and the winning or losing points are distributed evenly amongst team members.
Initial ratings AOC
- New Players Lobby (NPL) ratings will reduce by -400 points.
- New Players Lobby (NPL) ratings will start at 1200 and be limited to 1400
- New Intermediate Lobby (IPL) ratings will reduce by -200 points.
- New Intermediate Lobby (IPL) ratings will start at 1400 and be limited to 1600
- Medieval Siege and Custom Scenario lobbies will remain at 1600 and have no upper limit.
Increase points for TG
The charge below shows the points exchanged under the old and new system in an evenly matched game. We're making some small increases (from the per-player perspective) for larger games. This is something we might increase further in the future.
Team Fairness
To help visualize how this helps prevent noob bashing, you can look at the charts below. It compares points won on a "balanced game" (all players similar rates) and a "bash game" (1 player much higher rate).
X axis is player's win percentage during 10 games . Y axis is % of points won after 10 games. Points won equation is (Win% * Points-On-Win + (1-Win%) * Points-On-Loss)*10 games.
For example, the green line at 85% is 42pts, that means if a player won 85% of their games at against this group of players they would win 40 pts in 10 games.
The chart below shows when gaining 20 pts the existing Elo only has a 10% win difference requirement, i.e., if you play stacked teams you only need to win 10% more games (1 of 10 games) to get the same amount of points as someone playing balanced matches! The new/improved doubles the difference.
This chart highlights how at at 70% win %, the existing Elo only has a 10 point advantage for players playing a balanced matches. The new/improved doubles the difference.
What causes a game's points to be altered?
- If a player drops due to connectivity problems, the individual will not gain points.
- If allies switch teams mid-game, the points will alter accordingly.
- If cheating of any kind is discovered in a rated game, the perpetrator(s) will be penalized.
- If there is an system error, please report on the forum and your match will be reset.
Are there other ways to earn points?
- If you join an official tournament, you may earn the opportunity to gain several more points than you would otherwise.
- Dependent on the amount of participants, official rules and specifications, the winner(s) may potentially earn several hundred points.
- For further information, check out our Hosting a Tournament page.
Can I play a non-rated game on Voobly?
- Yes, just make sure to join or host games with "Rating: Off" selected.

Ratings iniciales en "New Player Lobby (NPL)"
- New Players Lobby (NPL) ratings se reducirá por -400 puntos.
- New Players Lobby (NPL) ratings comenzarán con 1200 y serán limitados a 1400
- New Intermediate Lobby (IPL) ratings se reducirá por -200 puntos.
- New Intermediate Lobby (IPL) ratings comenzarán con 1400 y serán limitados a 1600
